WHO WE ARE

In 2013, OneD Material acquired Nanosys’ nanowire technologies and Palo Alto R&D activities.

Today, OneD Material operates a SiNANOde™ pilot production to support the development of advanced electrochemical cells and the initial production of its technology licensees.

Building upon over a decade of R&D, Dr. Yimin Zhu, OneD material’s CTO, leads a team that continues to improve the SiNANOde™ technology and supports customers producing advanced energy storage solutions for various markets.

OneD Material engages with leading material suppliers, battery makers, and their customers to adapt the technology and its production to meet their technical and business needs. 

Collaborating with customers in US, Europe and Asia, OneD Material’s joint R&D, technology transfer and license agreements are designed to optimize and expand the SiNANOde™ production processes. The licensed manufacturing process is the world’s first scalable production of silicon nanowires for Lithium-ion batteries.

OneD Material’s patent portfolio includes over 300 patents and patent applications covering many nanowire inventions ranging from basic structures to processes. In addition to inventions developed by Nanosys during the prior decade and by OneD Material more recently, the portfolio also includes inventions from leading scientists at Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania and other top universities (view patents).

NEW ANODE NANOMATERIAL IMPROVES LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

SiNANOde™ is a high-performance silicon-graphite nanomaterial capable of significantly increasing the energy density and cycle life of a large variety of Lithium-ion batteries.

SiNANOde™ consists of silicon nanowires grown on various types of commercially available graphite powder. It can be produced in various grades ranging from 8% to 50% silicon to carbon weight ratio.

The performance of full cells using SiNANOde™ can be optimized to meet the specific requirements of each application.

The SiNANOde™ anodes can be matched with many existing and new cathodes, including NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide), LCO (Lithium Cobalt Oxide), NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese Oxide) cathodes and other materials.

SiNANOde™ is well suited for many market segments ranging from critical Military and Medical applications, to higher volume applications in Consumer Electronics and Electrical Vehicles.

SCALABLE MANUFACTURING PROCESS INTEGRATES EASILY WITH TRADITIONAL ANODE PRODUCTION

SiNANOde™ production starts with any of the commercially available types of graphite.

A deposition process adds catalyst nanoparticles onto each graphite particle to later initiate nanowire growth directly onto the graphite in the CVD furnace.

The density of catalyst nanoparticles per graphite particle, as well as other furnace parameters determine the final silicon content per gram of graphite.

Thanks to a proprietary reaction chamber design, each CVD furnace, under automated software control of all process parameters, converts 99.99% of the Silane gas into silicon nanowires attached to the graphite particles.

The resulting SiNANOde™ powder can then easily replace the standard graphite to make a slurry applied onto electrode foil using traditional roll-to-roll production equipment.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER & LICENSING ENABLES MULTI-SOURCING & IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING OF SiNANOde™

OneD Material owns a large and growing portfolio of over 300 patents on nanowire structures and processes, including fundamental inventions from leading scientists at Harvard, Berkeley and other top universities, resulting from more than a decade of R&D investments.

OneD Material's goal is to license these inventions, the manufacturing processes and its know-how, supporting the technology transfers and the production scale up and enabling the broad adoption of SiNANOde™ material into next generation Lithium-ion batteries across multiple industries and products.

OneD Material operates a R&D and pilot production facility in Palo Alto producing over 1000 Kg/year of SiNANOde™ to support customers’ cell development & testing and their initial production scale up.

Battery makers can chose to vertically integrate the SiNANOde™ production, or to rely on multiple suppliers based on their business considerations and volume forecast.
